— Literary theory is the way modern English studies is still let through by universities as a subject in its own right for high-IQ kids. But science will always be a realer, nobler vocation for big brains. Indeed, it disturbs literary theory: science is not just impervious to it, it is on an entirely different track, a different means of transport. In a way, it invalidates theory and its soft paradigms.
