Thanks for your response to my amateur’s thoughts on jazz. I wonder if there will be (or has been to a small extent) a ‘backlash’ to fusion, a bit like there is in pop music from time to time. It doesn’t derive from an urge to ‘preserve’ but to re-energise, via getting ‘back to basics.’ In pop it was punk, grunge, garage, etc. Perhaps this doesn’t quite relate to fusion infiltrating jazz: fusion, I thought, attempted to open up jazz and blend it with other musical movements (with mixed results, as you mention), whereas the ‘keep it real’ pop movements tried to wrest back power from the corporate hegemony of record companies.
